Royce Wood

Royce Wood is located in the historic Amber Mill Wheelhouse at Oakerthorpe and set among the Derbyshire hills, Royce Wood produce a unique range of handmade tiles. The defining characteristic of the collection is that each stage of the production is achieved entirely by hand. This involves a time consuming process and means that no two pieces are alike, each is an individual work of art.

Variegated glaze fused into the clay body has become the hall mark of Royce Wood. Naturally occurring minerals such as iron, copper, cobalt and manganese are blended using original Victorian oxide recipes before being hand glazed onto the tiles, often in several layers. This achieves the depth and lustre required by the artists at Royce Wood.

Royce Wood was selected as a finalist in the Tile of the Year Awards 2006. The designs have also featured in the US magazine ‘Elle Décor’ as well as the recently published book – Decorative British Tiles. The studio has also recently completed a private commission to the replace the wall plaque outside the famous ‘Rovers Return’ pub featured in ITV's long running soap 'Coronation Street'.
